THE HOTEL INDUSTRY OF UKRAINE IN THE CONDITIONS OF WAR: CURRENT STATE AND PROSPECTS FOR DEVELOPMENT
Abstract
This study will examine the negative effects of war on the state of the hotel industry in Ukraine. We analyze the destruction of hotel infrastructure, the loss of hotel enterprises as a result of the occupation of the territory, the problems of the outflow of qualified personnel and the sharp decrease in the number of consumers of hotel services, and adaptation to the conditions of the curfew and air alarms. The peculiarities of the behavior of the hotel business at different stages of the war and territorial differences in the development of the hotel industry during the period of military operations are also evaluated. An analysis of the functioning of Ukrainian hotel chains was carried out using the Reikartz and Premier Hotel chains as study cases. We study the consequences of the decrease in economic activity within the hotel industry in different regions of the country. In particular, a decrease in tax deductions was observed in the Odessa region (-78.6%), which was caused by the absence of a tourist season, as well as in the city of Kyiv (-43%). Despite a number of negative trends associated with the development of the country's hotel industry during the war, we note that some positive trends in the hotel sector are observed in Western Ukraine. Notable examples of hotel development in Western Ukraine include a new Best Western Plus Market Square, part of the American hotel chain of the same name, opened in Lviv, along with the new Ibis brand hotel, operated by the Accor chain. Nearby in Vynnyky-Lviv, the large recreation and resort complex Emily Resort was opened; however, these projects were already in progress at the time of the full-scale military invasion, and opened in the summer of 2022, several months into the conflict. Among the further prospects for the development of the hotel industry in Ukraine, we can highlight: a reorientation of the hotel business to safer areas of Western Ukraine; the activation of resort hotels; an ongoing adaptation of hotel enterprises to the realities of wartime and search for new forms of service; refurbishing hotels while taking into account safety and autonomous operation requirements; and the approximation of the standards of the Ukranian hotel industry to the standards of the European Union.
