RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TOURISM STATISTICS AND STAFF MOTIVATION IN THE HOSPITALITY SECTOR: EUROPEAN EXPERIENCE
Abstract
Tourism in a statistical context refers to the activity of visitors who make a trip to a location outside their usual environment for a shorter period. This may be for any main purpose, including business, leisure or other specific reasons, other than employment for a resident, household or enterprise in the place visited. Tourism statistics consist of two main components: on the one hand, statistics on the capacity and occupancy of collective tourist establishments; on the other hand, statistics on tourism demand. In some cases, the former are collected through surveys completed by accommodation establishments, while the latter are mainly collected through surveys of travellers at border crossings or through household surveys. Statistics on the capacity of collective tourist establishments include the number of establishments, the number of bedrooms and the number of bed places. These statistics are available by type of establishment or by region and are compiled annually. Statistics on the occupancy of collective tourist establishments include the number of revenues (before accommodation of establishments) and the number of nights spent by residents and non-residents, broken down by type of establishment or by region; annual and monthly statistical series are available. In addition, statistics on the use of bedrooms and bed places (occupancy rates) are compiled. Statistics on tourism demand are collected on the number of tourist trips made (and the number of nights spent on these trips), identified by: country of destination; provision; length of stay; type of accommodation; month of departure; mode of transport; expenditure. The data are also analysed by socio-demographic characteristics of the tourist: gender; age group; education level (optional); household income (optional); activity status (optional). Tourism can play a significant role in the development of regions. Infrastructure created for tourism purposes improves local development, and the jobs created or maintained can help to counteract industrial or rural decline. Sustainable tourism preserves and enhances cultural and natural heritage, from art to gastronomy or local biodiversity conservation.
