Keywords: higher education, competencies, skills, sustainable development, personalization, adaptive learning

Abstract

The article explores the main directions of higher education modernization and the competencies required for the rapid recovery of the Ukrainian economy. The necessity of changes in the higher education system is demonstrated due to demographic and technological shifts in society. It is emphasized that education can bring profound, fundamental changes to society and contribute to sustainable innovative economic development for the swift post-war economic recovery. The future education system should provide opportunities for realizing the transformative potential to adapt to new conditions and contribute to economic reconstruction. The highlighted key changes in higher education on the path to sustainable economic recovery in Ukraine include: supporting students' mental health; utilizing artificial intelligence in the educational process; developing competencies; expanding the functions and role of career centers in higher education institutions; and improved personalization and adaptive learning. It is noted that the use of artificial intelligence in the educational process has tremendous potential. A competency-based approach offers greater flexibility, focusing on the demonstration of specific skills and competencies. The article identifies essential skills that will facilitate the social, individual, ecological, and digital transition to sustainable development and should be integrated into the higher education system. The necessity of developing students' cognitive awareness is emphasized. In the contemporary world, qualities such as awareness, curiosity, decisiveness, resilience, ethics, and leadership are essential. Future professionals must possess not only new technologies but, equally importantly, values associated with their use. Creativity, flexibility, and adaptability are also mandatory qualities. Engaging in key areas such as innovation, interconnectedness, cross-disciplinarity, collaboration, adaptability, and resilience, as well as fostering open innovation, can facilitate the transformation of higher education.
