TRANSFORMATION OF ETHICAL ASPECTS OF SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH IN THE CONTEXT OF DIGITALISATION
Abstract
Digitalisation brings new agenda to the scientific research domain, with data (accessible, open, massive) becoming the main object of scientific investigation. The appropriate transformation of the scientific research culture and ethics should accompany the digital transformation of the field of scientific research. This study summarises the content of transformational changes and emphasises the main ethical principles that distinguish good scientific research practices in working with data. The article emphasises integrating the principles of information and research ethics in the context of digitalisation. The principles of research ethics – respect, competence, responsibility, honesty – acquire a broader meaning, being considered from the standpoint of guaranteeing privacy, accuracy, property, and availability of information (i.e., the basic rules of information ethics). The article proposes a matrix for integrating the content of the ethical principles of scientific research with the principles of information ethics. The principles defined in the matrix are not exhaustive and illustrate only the general context of the transformation of research culture and behaviour. These principles can take on the content of specific rules of conduct in certain conditions and practices. These principles could be implemented through particular tools: informed consent, compliance with data privacy and intellectual property laws, proper referencing, application of metadata standards, dissemination of scientific research results through unique digital platforms, etc. Thus, transforming the scientific research ethics in digitalisation conditions also puts forward new requirements for the researcher's competency. All this creates specific challenges for representatives of the scientific environment. The search for ways to respond to these challenges and mitigate their consequences, as well as the development of tools to promote the implementation of appropriate ethical practices, may be the subject of further scientific exploration in this area.
