TOURISM AND RECREATION POTENTIAL OF THE KHARKIV REGION: GEOGRAPHICAL AND SOCIO-ECONOMIC DETERMINANTS OF TRANSFORMATION AND DEVELOPMENT
Abstract
The article examines the tourism and recreational potential of the Kharkiv region, taking into account the natural-geographical, historical-cultural, health-resort, and infrastructure resources of the territory. The relevance of the study is determined by the need to integrate diverse resources into a comprehensive system capable of creating a multifunctional tourism product, stimulating the socio-economic development of the region, improving the quality of life of the population, and contributing to the sustainable recovery of the territory in the post-war period. The natural-geographical conditions of the region are highlighted, including a moderately continental climate, undulating relief, river networks, reservoirs, and forested areas, which serve as a basis for active, educational, water-based, ecological, and wellness tourism. The historical and cultural heritage of the region is analyzed, including archaeological monuments, monumental art, and museums, as well as health-resort resources, particularly mineral waters and sanatorium-resort facilities. Systemic problems in the operation of sanatoriums and resorts have been identified, including outdated material and technical infrastructure, insufficient medical equipment, limited marketing activity, and weak digital communication. Special attention is given to the development of urban recreation using the example of the “Green Framework” concept in Kharkiv, which envisions the integration of parks, rivers, and green corridors into a unified urban ecosystem with a network of pedestrian and bicycle routes. The socio-economic significance of tourism for the region is emphasized: the creation of a comprehensive tourism product promotes economic growth, social stability, community integration, the improvement of the physical and psycho-emotional health of the population, and the preservation of natural and cultural resources. The Kharkiv region is characterized by significant tourism and recreational potential, combining natural, historical-cultural, and health-resort resources, and has the capacity to become a competitive destination for a wide range of tourism services, including cultural-educational, wellness, active, and rural tourism.
