THE ROLE OF RENEWABLE ENERGY IN THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF UKRAINE'S TERRITORIES
Abstract
The article examines the pivotal role of renewable energy in advancing sustainable development across Ukraine’s territories, with a focus on the ongoing war and its profound impact on the country’s energy infrastructure. Renewable energy emerges as a crucial solution to pressing global issues like climate change and the depletion of fossil fuels. By reducing reliance on non-renewable sources, bolstering energy security, and promoting ecological balance, renewable energy presents significant advantages. The study underscores its strategic role in Ukraine’s post-war recovery and modernization of the energy system. Ukraine’s potential for renewable energy expansion is shaped by its favorable natural conditions, including ample solar radiation, substantial wind resources, and abundant agricultural biomass. Despite the challenges posed by the conflict, Ukraine has shown resilience by commissioning new renewable energy facilities in safer regions. The article also addresses the hurdles faced by the sector, such as the destruction of energy infrastructure, delays in project implementation, and the urgent need for investment and international collaboration. Key insights from the research include an overview of the current state of Ukraine's renewable energy sector and its role in cutting greenhouse gas emissions, enhancing regional energy independence, and generating economic benefits through employment and investment opportunities. The integration of renewable energy into the national energy framework aligns with global decarbonization trends and Ukraine’s efforts to meet European energy standards. The article concludes that renewable energy serves not only as a short-term solution to Ukraine’s immediate energy challenges during the war but also as a cornerstone of long-term sustainable development. Recommendations include strategies for incorporating renewable energy into regional planning, fostering international cooperation, and adopting advanced technologies. These findings aim to guide policy-making and practical actions toward achieving energy independence and resilience in Ukraine’s post-war recovery.
