Abstract

This article examines sacred sculptures of holy warriors in the architectural landscape of Lviv, focusing on historical, cultural, and touristic aspects. As one of Ukraine’s major tourist destinations, Lviv possesses a unique cultural heritage, in which architectural sculpture plays a significant role. Images of holy warriors take on particular significance in the context of the current sociocultural situation. Despite the high concentration of such objects in the urban space, there is a problem with their inadequate identification in guidebooks and insufficient scholarly research for the needs of tour guide activities. The aim of this article is to identify, systematize, and conduct an iconographic analysis of sculptural depictions of holy warriors (Archangel Michael, Saints George, Martin, Florian, and Demetrius) in Lviv, as well as to justify their inclusion in contemporary tourist itineraries. The study employs desk-based and field research methods, art historical analysis, and typological classification. The author conducted a survey of church facades, townhouses, and the interiors of religious buildings to identify sacred sculptures. This article provides a detailed examination of the iconography of holy warriors in Lviv sculpture from the Renaissance to the present day. It analyzes the works of prominent masters such as Johann Pinsel, Sebastian Fesinger, Petro Viitovych, and others. A connection is established between the appearance of certain figures and the professional or patronage activities of the patrons (M. Makovych, M. Anchevsky). Specific errors in the identification of sculptures in popular tourist publications are identified. The study demonstrated that images of holy warriors in Lviv have not only religious but also deep symbolic significance of protection and patronage. The most widespread are the images of Archangel Michael and St. George the Dragon Slayer. The image of St. Florian clearly correlates with the development of the fire service in the city. The author argues that the existing potential of sacred sculpture is not being fully utilized in tourism. The development of a thematic tour route dedicated to the holy warriors is proposed. The importance of such a route for the patriotic education of youth and the psychological rehabilitation of war veterans is emphasized, which adds social and humanitarian relevance to the study.
