CHANGE MANAGEMENT IN SMALL BUSINESS MANAGEMENT SYSTEM: CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES
Abstract
The article explores the theoretical and practical aspects of change management in the context of small business management systems under conditions of economic uncertainty and rapid environmental transformations. Small enterprises, which play a significant role in national economies, often face a limited ability to respond flexibly to external changes due to scarce resources, insufficient strategic planning, and organizational rigidity. The study identifies key challenges in implementing change management in small businesses, such as employee resistance, lack of digital readiness, and minimal access to financial and institutional support. At the same time, the paper emphasizes the potential opportunities that small businesses can utilize to strengthen their adaptability and sustainability. These include the development of an innovative organizational culture, improvement of managerial competencies, introduction of flexible decision-making mechanisms, and the active use of digital technologies. Particular attention is paid to the role of leadership and employee involvement in shaping a proactive attitude toward change. As a result of the analysis, the article proposes a conceptual model for adapting small businesses to change, based on the synergy between internal reserves and external environmental opportunities. Internal reserves include organizational flexibility, innovative thinking, qualified personnel, financial reserves, and openness to change. External opportunities are presented in the form of market dynamics, technological progress, government programs, business support infrastructure, and international cooperation. The model is built on the principles of strategic adaptability, scenario planning, and continuous monitoring of environmental signals. The article concludes that effective change management in small businesses requires not only internal transformations but also the ability to integrate external knowledge and resources. The proposed model may serve as a practical tool for business owners and managers to enhance their company’s resilience and competitive advantage in a dynamic market environment. The results of the study can also be useful for policymakers, consultants, and educators who support small business development. Further research is recommended to test the proposed model in specific industry contexts and to develop implementation tools tailored to various types of small enterprises.
