REINTEGRATION OF VETERANS INTO CIVILIAN LIFE: INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE AND SPECIFICS IN UKRAINE
Abstract
The article explores the critical significance of veteran reintegration into civilian life, particularly in the context of the growing number of veterans facing socio-psychological challenges in the aftermath of military conflict. The research is based on the premise that a holistic approach, incorporating psychological support, physical rehabilitation, and comprehensive state assistance, can greatly enhance the reintegration and adaptation process for veterans. The importance of such an approach is magnified by the fact that veterans often confront a complex combination of psychological and physical challenges, making it difficult for them to reintegrate into their pre-conflict roles within society. The study sheds light on the fact that veterans who receive robust, multi-dimensional support tend to show marked improvements in key areas, particularly in rebuilding relationships with their families and achieving a successful return to social life. The psychological hurdles that many veterans face, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and trauma, are often exacerbated by physical injuries and the isolation they experience upon returning to civilian life. This sense of detachment from their communities and families can lead to a prolonged struggle with reintegration. However, the availability of targeted support systems-addressing both psychological and physical rehabilitation as well as facilitating employment and social engagement-can significantly improve the veterans’ quality of life and contribute to a smoother transition back into society. The article also highlights the pivotal role of the state in this process, emphasizing that government-backed initiatives are essential to addressing the multifaceted needs of veterans. It argues that state authorities must provide a range of tailored services, including accessible healthcare, affordable housing, and vocational support, all of which are essential to ensuring the successful reintegration of veterans. The findings suggest that veterans benefit most from reintegration programs that focus on ongoing psychological care, physical rehabilitation, and the creation of stable employment opportunities. The article concludes with a strong emphasis on the pressing need to design and implement reintegration programs in Ukraine that are tailored to the specific needs of veterans.
