SUBJECTIVE POVERTY IN UKRAINE: DYNAMICS AND IMPACT OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC
Abstract
The article is dedicated to analyzing subjective poverty in Ukraine. The relevance of studying subjective poverty as a social phenomenon in the modern world cannot be underestimated. It is a key issue that impacts the quality of life and well-being of the population, as well as social stability and a country's development. Subjective poverty is the way people perceive and experience their own financial status and social position. It describes not only actual income and economic indicators but also the emotional and psychological aspects of financial well-being. One of the key reasons that make studying subjective poverty a relevant research topic is its importance in developing social and economic policies. The research aims to analyze the characteristics and dynamics of subjective poverty in Ukraine over the past decade and identify key periods of growth or reduction in this phenomenon. The dynamics of subjective poverty were assessed by focusing on indicators such as «self-defined poverty level» and «degree of satisfaction with needs». The article evaluates the impact of events such as the global economic crisis at the end of 2008, the Euromaidan revolution, the war with russia, and the COVID-19 pandemic on the perception of poverty and the satisfaction level of basic needs in Ukrainian society. It highlights the importance of studying subjective poverty from various perspectives, including socio-economic, psychological, and political aspects. During the study, it was found that the period from 2007 to 2008 marked the lowest levels of subjective poverty. Additionally, an improvement in the situation began after 2016. In the first case, this improvement may be linked to a period of stable economic growth and improved economic conditions in the country. In the second case, it may indicate a certain optimism that followed political and social turbulence. It is important to note that subjective poverty in Ukraine does not always correlate with societal events or economic indicators. It is heavily influenced by individual factors such as personal income, mentality, education, health, and many others. The psychological component is also crucial since the perception of poverty can significantly differ from the actual financial situation.
