FUNCTIONING OF SMALL AND MEDIUM-SIZED ENTERPRISES IN UKRAINE: CURRENT STATE AND DEVELOPMENT PROSPECTS
Abstract
The article analyses the functioning of small and medium businesses to identify future trends and prospects for their development, considering changes in the modern economic context. Statistics show and confirm primary changes in structure-functional indicators of the development of small and medium-sized enterprises. The research analyzes statistics of business demography and the key performance indicators of small and medium-sized enterprises for 2010-2020 (rate of production and sales, capital investment, equity, value-added, and profitability) and makes their comparative analysis. It has found out peculiarities of the functioning of small-sized business compared to other types, as well as its strengths and weaknesses. The beforementioned made it possible to determine future development priorities given the current realities of martial law, economic situation and expert forecasts. The author proves that small and medium-sized businesses should be regarded as a social basis for economic reforms and the basis for stabilizing the economy in the post-war period. During the study, it has been established small enterprises are a significant generator of added value, employment, investment and innovation, and alleviation of social tensions. Thus, small businesses, incl. micro-enterprises, should obtain maximum support and assistance in developing in wartime and the post-war period. Due to their vulnerability, small and micro-enterprises need more active protection and support from the state than medium-sized enterprises through temporary measures and programs of financial (credit, tax, compensation, etc.), information, innovation, advisory, and personnel support. The practical significance of the study is that given intensification of state support for all enterprises without exception (including large and medium), it is substantiated that such support should be differentiated by the size of enterprises. Such an action will save costs on such support and increase its targeting, effectiveness, and consistency.
