PROBLEMS AND PROSPECTS OF DOMESTIC TOURISM DEVELOPMENT IN TERMS OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC

Abstract

The article is devoted to the problems and prospects of domestic tourism in the COVID-19 pandemic. The author considers and identifies the main problems that have arisen in the tourism industry due to the introduction of quarantine restrictions. The tourism market, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the introduction of quarantine in Ukraine and around the world, has lost a large number of tourists, reduced demand for travel services and products. Tourist businesses (tour operators and travel agents, hotels and catering establishments, carriers) suffered losses due to lack of consumers, a number of businesses went bankrupt and closed. Tourists have new habits and preferences to which the tourism industry must adapt. The number of tourists in Ukraine served by tour operators and travel agents was studied. The author analyzed the volumes of incoming, outgoing and domestic tourists in Ukraine during 2016-2020. It was found that the number of foreign tourists visiting Ukraine in 2020 decreased by up to 11,964 people, which was 86.2% less than in 2019. The number of outbound tourists in 2020 decreased to 2125702 people, which was 61.5% less than in 2019. The number of domestic tourists in 2020 decreased to 222612 people, which was 57.22% less than in 2019.The number of tour operators and travel agents was analyzed and it was found that with the introduction of quarantine restrictions the number of tourism entities in Ukraine decreased. In 2020, the number of tour operators decreased by 15.98% compared to 2019. The number of travel agents - legal entities in 2020 decreased by 11.91% compared to 2019. In 2020, the number of travel agents - private entrepreneurs decreased to 2,306 businesses, which was 12.78% less than in 2019. Measures that should be implemented in the future in domestic tourism are considered. To overcome the crisis in domestic tourism, tourism entities need to adapt to new challenges and changes, introduce new tourism services, apply the latest ways to sell tourism products. The national government and local authorities should promote the socio-economic development of tourist regions and support tourism entities.
