STRUCTURAL FEATURES OF THE ECONOMY OF UKRAINE: HISTORICAL HERITAGE AND LONG-TERM CONSEQUENCES
Abstract
The relevance of the study is determined by the need to identify the historical origins of the structural imbalances of Ukraine’s economy and to assess their long-term impact on contemporary economic development. The purpose of the article is to investigate the historical determinants of the current sectoral and institutional structure of Ukraine’s economy through the concept of path dependence and to identify the long-term consequences of historical economic development for structural modernization and integration into the European economic area. The methodological framework combines the historical and economic approach with the institutional theory of path dependence. The research is based on historical-comparative, historical-genetic, structural-functional, and institutional methods, as well as methods of scientific generalization and comparative analysis. These approaches were used to identify the continuity between the Soviet economic model, post-socialist transformation processes, and the current structural characteristics of the Ukrainian economy. The study demonstrates that the existing structural disproportions originate from the Soviet model of centralized planning, production specialization, and resource-oriented industrial development. It is established that incomplete market reforms, privatization, weak institutional capacity, and the concentration of economic power contributed to preserving path-dependent mechanisms rather than overcoming them. As a result, structural simplification, technological backwardness, dependence on global market fluctuations, and the dominance of low-value-added exports have become persistent features of the national economy. The findings also indicate that these inherited structural and institutional constraints reduce innovation performance, weaken economic resilience, and complicate Ukraine’s integration into the European economic space. At the same time, the study substantiates that successful structural modernization requires not only institutional convergence with the European Union but also the elimination of historically rooted structural distortions and the formation of inclusive institutions capable of stimulating technological renewal and competitive development. The practical significance of the study lies in the application of its findings as a historical and economic foundation for designing structural modernization policies and implementing institutional reforms.
