ASSESSMENT OF THE STRUCTURAL DYNAMICS OF FREIGHT TURNOVER IN THE TRANSPORT AND LOGISTICS SYSTEM OF UKRAINE
Abstract
The article is devoted to the study of the structural dynamics of freight turnover in the transport and logistics system of Ukraine during 1990–2025. Based on statistical data, the changes in the distribution of freight turnover by modes of transport were analyzed and the key trends of its structural transformation were identified. The study examines the long-term changes in the role of railway, road, pipeline, water, and air transport in the freight transportation system of Ukraine under the influence of economic transformations, infrastructural changes, and geopolitical challenges. A methodological approach to assessing the structural dynamics of freight turnover is proposed. The approach is based on the application of the index of differences, the cumulative structural transformation index, the Herfindahl–Hirschman Index, the Gini coefficient, and the Theil index. The use of these indicators made it possible to assess the intensity of structural shifts, identify the cumulative nature of changes, and determine the level of concentration and unevenness in the distribution of freight turnover among transport modes. The results of the study indicate a significant decline in the total volume of freight turnover in Ukraine during the analyzed period, accompanied by substantial structural changes. In particular, the role of land transport increased, especially road freight transportation, while water and pipeline transport experienced a considerable decrease in their share within the overall freight turnover structure. Railway transport retained its dominant position, although its functional role in the transport and logistics system underwent noticeable changes. The identified structural shifts reflect the transformation of the transport and logistics system of Ukraine, changes in the configuration of logistics networks and transport chains, as well as the growing concentration of freight flows among certain transport modes. It was substantiated that the assessment of structural dynamics provides an opportunity to determine the level of concentration, diversification, and resilience of the transport and logistics system. The obtained results confirm the necessity of forming a more balanced, sustainable, and adaptive logistics system in Ukraine capable of responding effectively to modern economic and infrastructural challenges.
