TOURISM POTENTIAL OF ZAKARPATTIA OBLAST: A STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF VISITOR ATTENDANCE AND TRANSPORT ACCESSIBILITY
Abstract
The article aims to assess the tourism potential of the Zakarpattia region of Ukraine in the context of changing transport accessibility and the influence of martial law on the functioning of the tourism sector. The relevance of the study is determined by the increasing importance of understanding spatial disparities in regional tourism development and the need to adapt tourism systems to crisis conditions that affect mobility, safety, and economic stability. The objective of the research is to identify the main factors shaping tourist flows and the economic performance of tourism activities in the region. The methodological basis of the study includes statistical analysis, comparative analysis, and spatial-structural assessment, which allow for examining changes in tourism dynamics, distribution of tourism resources, and the relationship between infrastructure development and tourist activity. The information base consists of indicators related to tourism infrastructure, visitation levels of natural and recreational sites, and tourism tax revenues. The obtained results show that tourism activity in the region is unevenly distributed and strongly influenced by transport connectivity and the concentration of tourism infrastructure. Areas with developed transport networks and urban centers demonstrate higher levels of tourist flows, while mountainous territories maintain significant recreational potential but display seasonal and structurally differentiated tourism activity. The study also reveals a significant decline in tourism activity under martial law conditions, followed by gradual recovery driven by the growth of domestic tourism, increased recreational demand, and adaptive use of natural areas for recovery and rehabilitation purposes. An upward trend in tourism tax revenues indicates the partial stabilization and revitalization of the tourism sector and the strengthening role of local tourism businesses. The practical value of the study lies in its applicability for regional tourism planning, infrastructure modernization, and policy development aimed at improving spatial accessibility, enhancing tourism competitiveness, and increasing the resilience of the tourism sector under crisis and post-crisis conditions.
