FINANCIAL DETERMINANTS OF UKRAINE’S ECONOMIC INTEGRATION INTO THE GLOBAL SPACE
Abstract
The article summarises the financial determinants of global economic integration and identifies the financial determinants of Ukraine’s economic integration. The relevance of the study is confirmed by the fact that there is no unified understanding of economic integration in the scientific literature, and the financial determinants influencing the level of countries’ integration into the global space remain insufficiently explored. The study employs a set of general and special research methods, including theoretical generalisation, synthesis and analysis, comparative analysis, visualisation, and others. The role of financial determinants as a resource base for integration is outlined, and it is proposed to consider them as a multi-level system encompassing supranational, regional, national, and corporate levels; financial determinants are identified for each of these levels. A periodisation of Ukraine’s economic integration into the global space is proposed. During 1991–1995, Ukraine’s integration was fragmented and accompanied by socio-economic and financial transformations, hyperinflation, problems in the banking system, a decline in the level of monetisation of the economy, and other challenges. The key financial determinants for this period are identified. It is confirmed that in the subsequent period Ukraine established stable partnerships with international institutions. The key financial determinants of the second period are also determined. The third stage (2005–2013) of economic integration is characterised, during which an increase in Ukraine’s foreign trade openness is confirmed. Among the financial determinants, the following are highlighted: foreign direct investment, the exchange rate policy of the National Bank, access to debt financing, and others. The period of 2014–2021 was oriented toward Ukraine’s European integration. The key financial determinants included macrofinancial stabilisation, expansion of external financing, restructuring of the banking system, and liberalisation of currency regulation, among others. The main challenges and financial determinants of the current stage of Ukraine’s economic integration are analysed, and priority directions for maintaining this integration are identified. Further research will focus on determining models of Ukraine’s integration into the global space, taking into account post-war recovery and macroeconomic stability.
