SPATIAL DIFFERENTIATION OF ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE FROM THE WAR IN UKRAINE AND ITS IMPACT ON SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF REGIONS
Abstract
The article presents an expanded and comprehensive analysis of the spatial differentiation of environmental damage caused by the war in Ukraine during 2022–2025, emphasizing the uneven distribution of ecological risks and their long-term implications for sustainable regional development. The study highlights that the most severely affected territories are located in the eastern and southern regions, where intensive military operations, industrial destruction, and prolonged occupation have resulted in significant contamination of soils, water resources, and the atmosphere. Particular attention is given to the degradation of protected areas, the loss of biodiversity, and the formation of persistent “toxic landscapes” that pose long-term threats to environmental stability and human health. The article argues that environmental consequences of the war are multidimensional and require a combination of quantitative, qualitative, and spatial assessment methods, including the use of GIS technologies, satellite data, and eco-economic valuation tools. Spatial disparities in environmental losses highlight the necessity of strengthening national monitoring systems and integrating environmental considerations into post-war reconstruction strategies. Special emphasis is placed on the socio-economic effects of environmental degradation, such as reduced agricultural productivity, contamination of drinking water sources, increased health risks, and the decline of ecosystem services vital for regional development. The findings demonstrate that successful recovery requires a coordinated, long-term approach based on international experience, innovative remediation technologies, and the integration of sustainability principles into national policy. The article concludes that addressing war-related environmental damage should be recognized as a priority dimension of national security and an essential precondition for Ukraine’s sustainable development in the post-war period.
