ASSESSMENT OF THE RECREATIONAL POTENTIAL OF THE NATURE RESERVE FUND OF UKRAINE
Abstract
The relevance of the study is driven by the urgent need to identify internal reserves for Ukraine’s development in the context of war-related destruction, territorial losses, and the disruption of traditional economic ties. Protected areas are viewed as a strategic resource combining unique natural, cultural, and recreational opportunities that can serve as a basis for new forms of employment, the development of ecosystem services markets, regional branding, and innovative bioeconomic initiatives. The purpose of the article is to assess the resource potential of Ukraine’s protected areas, with a particular emphasis on the recreational component as the most promising in terms of socio-economic recovery and integration into European environmental policy. The methodology of the research combines systemic, spatial-geographical, and eco-economic approaches, applying quantitative analysis of national park performance indicators, SWOT analysis of internal and external development factors, and comparative evaluation of international practices. Elements of analytical modeling were used to outline possible scenarios for land use under war-related risks and post-war recovery needs. The results demonstrate the significant but underutilized potential of Ukraine’s protected areas. Large national parks were found to combine high ecological value, international status, and tourist attractiveness, yet their effectiveness is hindered by weak infrastructure, limited financial resources, and fragmented land use. The research highlighted that the recreational component is the most convertible into added value, capable of generating revenue from tourism, creating jobs, supporting related industries, and enhancing the attractiveness of territories. At the same time, substantial losses of resource potential due to war emphasize the urgency of creating effective mechanisms for recovery and integration into regional development strategies. The practical value of the study lies in providing a scientifically grounded basis for improving the management of the protected area system.
