TRENDS OF CURRENT MIGRATION FROM UKRAINE TO TURKEY
Abstract
The relevance of the analysis and study of Ukrainian migration to Turkey can be explained by several reasons. First of them is the global growth in number and intensity of international migration as well as the fact that in 2020 Ukraine ranked 8-th position among top migrant sending countries in the world (6.1 million people). So, Ukraine should be an object of migration studies as a source country of migrants among scholars. Secondly, the choice of the Republic of Turkey as a country of destination for Ukrainian migrants is actual primarily because, on the one hand, Ukraine today considers Turkey an important strategic partner, and on the other hand, there is a significant gap in the existence of migration studies from Ukraine to Turkey. At the same time Turkey is usually viewed by most scholars as a migrant sending country to the EU or a buffer country for asylum seekers and refugees. Thus, the aim of this paper is to analyze the dynamics and types of current migration flows of Ukrainian citizens to the Republic of Turkey and outline its main trends. To reach the aim the authors of the article, based on the analysis of various data, consider the number, dynamics, gender structure, and types of migration from Ukraine to Turkey in recent years, in particular, the changes in total number of Ukrainian migrants, migration balance, number and types of residence and work permits issued to Ukrainian citizens in Turkey, as well as the number of marriages with Turkish citizens and agreements on real estate conducted by Ukrainian citizens in Turkey. The authors conclude that there is a permanent growth in the total number of Ukrainians in Turkey with the predominance of women over men in terms of gender and family migration (migration with the aim to start a family) in terms of migration type. Thus, there is a high probability that the number of Ukrainians with long-term residence permit or permanent residence status will predominate in future and the number of children born in Ukrainian-Turkish mixed marriages will increase. Therefore, the study of integration of Ukrainians in Turkey, the development of Ukrainian communities in this country, the formation of transnational Ukrainian-Turkish migrant networks and their potential impact on political and economic relations between the two countries may be the prospects for further research.
