INVENTORY MANAGEMENT IN MANUFACTURING ENTERPRISES: THE INTERCONNECTION OF SALES AND PRODUCTION PLANNING
Abstract
This article is focused on inventory management and effective strategic and operational planning and control system in the framework of manufacturing planning and control. Emphasized that efficient inventory management starts with designing and implementing a proper operations planning and control system. This system should link together sales, manufacturing and purchasing activities. In this research we apply methods of system analysis, scientific systematization and comparative evaluation. In this article we adopt a broad definition of inventory management and argue that it starts with forecasting of independent demand on the finished goods (end items). All subsequent steps in inventory management will be heavily dependent on the quality of the initial forecast. We argue that on the basis of this forecast a system of long-term, mid-term and short-term operational plans should be developed. Long-term or strategic plans define strategic objectives of the company. And they are occupied with production capacity, product lines, marketing strategy, organizational structures, investments and long-run financial targets. Next step in the planning procedures would be to develop a Sales and Operation Plan (SOP). It’s main focus would be an overall sales prognosis in terms of product groups, with a planning horizon extending up to one year. The quantities of products should be split by periods, taking into consideration labor, equipment and materials constraints. This level of planning starts engaging with inventory levels and can employ different inventory tactics. However, here inventory management is mostly generalized and concerned with financial equivalents of inventory. On the next stage of the planning process is situated the Master Production Schedule (MPS). MPS puts into details a Sales and Operation Plan using weekly (or daily) planning buckets and taking into consideration capacity constraints. Finally, on the basis of MPS Material Requirements Plan (MRP) is developed. MRP is a plan for obtaining the raw materials, parts and components needed in the production of the end items. The findings of this article can be used by the business in order to enhance the planning systems while optimizing the inventory management practices.
