THEORIES OF THE FIRM AS A METHODOLOGICAL BASIS FOR ENTERPRISE ECONOMIC SECURITY RESEARCH
Abstract
This article substantiates the relevance of using theories of the firm as a theoretical and methodological foundation for the analysis of enterprise economic security. The authors argue that economic security should not be regarded as an isolated attribute of the enterprise but rather as a function of the characteristics attributed to the firm within specific theoretical frameworks. By integrating various conceptualizations of the firm — as an economic agent, an institutional mechanism, a dynamic organization, or a coalition of interests — the study provides a comprehensive methodological approach to modeling economic security. The article presents a methodological analysis of major theoretical perspectives on the firm, highlighting their ontological differences and analytical potential. It identifies four fundamental conceptual frameworks, each reflecting distinct dimensions of the firm’s nature and functioning: the firm as a functional unit focused on resource transformation; as an institutional mechanism coordinating economic activities through contracts and rules; as a dynamic organization capable of learning and adapting; and as a coalition of stakeholders with diverse, often conflicting interests. Based on these frameworks, the authors propose a multidimensional analytical model of economic security that integrates corresponding dimensions: operational-technological, institutional-legal, adaptive-evolutionary, and coalition-behavioral. This model views economic security not as a set of isolated factors but as an interconnected system of internal resilience attributes that jointly determine the firm’s ability to maintain stability, adapt to changes, and withstand external and internal threats in a complex and turbulent environment. The proposed approach advances the theoretical understanding of economic security by embedding it within the broader ontology of the firm, thereby enabling more nuanced diagnostics, monitoring, and strategic management. It emphasizes the need for a systemic perspective that accounts for economic, organizational, behavioral, informational, contractual, and institutional aspects of security, fostering a holistic view of enterprise sustainability and competitiveness.
