THE CARPATHIAN REGION AS A SOCIO-SPACE: TOURISM AND SECURITY POTENTIAL
Abstract
This article provides an in-depth analysis of the Carpathian region as a unique socio-spatial environment, emphasizing its dual potential in tourism development and safety management. The Carpathians, renowned for their diverse natural landscapes, rich biodiversity, and vibrant cultural heritage, serve as a significant attraction for domestic and international tourists. The study examines how these natural and cultural assets contribute to the region's socio-economic development and explores the interplay between tourism growth and the maintenance of social order and safety. Key elements addressed include the evaluation of tourism infrastructure, accessibility, and service quality, alongside an assessment of potential risks such as environmental degradation, seasonal hazards, and socio-political challenges that may impact visitor safety and local community well-being. The article also highlights the role of local governance, community engagement, and policy frameworks in fostering a safe and welcoming environment for tourists while protecting the integrity of the region. Sustainability is a core theme throughout the research, with a focus on balancing economic benefits derived from tourism with the imperative to conserve natural ecosystems and cultural traditions. The article identifies current challenges, including the need for improved coordination among stakeholders and enhanced safety measures, and proposes strategic recommendations for sustainable tourism development and risk management. The main tourist centers of the study area have been identified as Yaremche, Bukovel, Slavske, Verkhovyna, Mizhhiria, and Rakhiv. These locations feature a well-developed network of hotels, private guesthouses, cottages, and holiday resorts, and they actively welcome tourists throughout the year. These zones are experiencing rapid growth in private initiatives in the service sector, ranging from traditional rural tourism to modern SPA complexes, restaurants, rental services, tour agencies, and active recreation infrastructure. Ultimately, this study contributes to a comprehensive understanding of the Carpathian region's socio-spatial dynamics and provides practical insights for policymakers, tourism operators, environmental managers, and researchers interested in optimizing the region’s tourism and safety potential in the context of sustainable regional development.
