CIRCULAR ECONOMY AS THE BASIS FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF THE MARITIME INDUSTRY

Keywords: circular economy, sustainable development, maritime industry, shipping, seaport

Abstract

The article explores the implementation of circular economy principles in the maritime industry, considering the IMO’s initiative to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions in international shipping by 2050. The aim of the article is to analyze how circular economy principles can be applied in the maritime sector to promote sustainable development and reduce environmental impact. The article examines the transition from a linear resource usage model to closed-loop systems, which focus on waste minimization, material reuse, and the application of environmentally efficient technologies. Special attention is given to the role of seaports and shipping in implementing circular approaches. The article identifies the main levels of circular economy implementation and their impact on sustainable development in the maritime sector. It also suggests possible directions for developing circular mechanisms to improve resource efficiency, reduce environmental load, and optimize logistics processes in the maritime industry. The practical significance of the research lies in providing recommendations for implementing circular economy principles in the operations of maritime industry enterprises. The results can help optimize resource use, reduce environmental impact, and improve economic efficiency in the maritime sector, promoting sustainable practices and resource management. Successful implementation of circular economy principles requires strategic initiatives, collaboration between port and shipping enterprises, government agencies, and the development of necessary infrastructure. Expanding circular mechanisms in the maritime sector will contribute to environmental sustainability and improve the sector's long-term efficiency. Achieving real change requires the consolidation of efforts from governments, maritime businesses, and other stakeholders. The integration of circular economy practices will foster sustainable growth, improve the competitiveness of the maritime industry, and contribute to meeting international environmental goals for 2050.
