EFFICIENCY OF PRODUCTION OF NICHE CEREALS IN THE CONTEXT OF ENSURING FOOD SECURITY AND CREATION OF ADDED VALUE

Abstract

The article reveals the relevance of the need to ensure food security in the world in today's conditions. Emphasis is placed on the fact that directly for the Ukrainian national economy, the creation of added value is an acute issue, especially in the context of processing of agricultural products in general and products of niche grain crops, in particular. The essence of niche cultures is briefly outlined, emphasis is placed on their multifunctionality. In particular, it is indicated that in the process of processing niche cereals, it is possible to obtain a wide range of products with added value, including in accordance with the trend of healthy food, which is gaining momentum in the world. It is argued that the cultivation of niche crops in general and cereals, in particular, leads to a number of effects in the economic, ecological and social planes, but under the condition of effective risk management. The dynamics of the production of niche grain crops in Ukraine during 2019-2023 were analyzed. During the analysis, it was found that niche grain crops were present in the crop rotation structure of all types of enterprises operating in the agricultural sector of Ukraine, including households, during the studied period. Features of the production of niche grain crops are presented on the example of their representatives, such as spring wheat, millet, oats and buckwheat. It was noted that during 2019-2023, the sown areas and gross harvests of spring wheat, millet and buckwheat increased significantly in agricultural enterprises and farms. Positive dynamics of oat production in agricultural enterprises were also revealed. The development of buckwheat production was the most dynamic in farms of all categories, including farms. The factors restraining the development of the production of niche grain crops are highlighted. Emphasis is placed on the fact that these crops contribute to ensuring food security, development of production of products with added value, diversification of agribusiness, open a number of opportunities for representatives of small businesses, and their production can potentially be accompanied by a high level of efficiency.
