EUROPEAN MECHANISMS FOR INCREASING THE ENERGY EFFICIENCY OF THE ECONOMY AND PROSPECTS FOR THEIR IMPLEMENTATION IN UKRAINE
Abstract
This article examines European mechanisms for improving energy efficiency and the prospects for their implementation in Ukraine's economy. The authors analyze key EU directives, including Directive 2012/27/EU on energy efficiency, as well as the European Green Deal, which establish modern energy-saving requirements for EU member states. Special attention is given to the importance of adopting these mechanisms in various sectors of Ukraine's economy: industry, transport, and housing and utilities. The article highlights that the most rapid implementation is expected in the transport and housing sectors, owing to existing international support and significant energy efficiency potential. At the same time, the industrial sector requires substantial investments for modernization. The study emphasizes the importance of international financing, particularly through programs like Horizon Europe and the Modernization Fund, to support these projects. The implementation of European mechanisms will help reduce energy consumption, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and enhance the competitiveness of Ukrainian enterprises. Additionally, the article underlines the significance of increasing Ukraine's energy independence by decreasing reliance on fossil fuels. The research demonstrates that the adaptation of European energy efficiency standards is a key factor for sustainable development and ensuring energy security. Moreover, the article stresses the role of international organizations, such as the European Investment Bank and programs like U-LEAD and GIZ, in providing technical assistance and funding for energy-saving projects. The findings suggest that the successful integration of European practices into Ukraine's energy sector will have positive environmental, economic, and social impacts. By adopting European mechanisms, Ukraine can improve long-term economic resilience, environmental sustainability, and energy independence. The article concludes by offering recommendations for the effective integration of European energy efficiency practices into Ukraine's regulatory and economic frameworks.
