SPORT AS A DETERMINANT OF COMMUNITY RESILIENCE IN THE POST-COVID PERIOD
Abstract
Discussing the role of sports in building community resilience in the post-COVID period is important for the stabilization and recovery of society. The purpose of the article is to investigate the impact of sports activities on the level of health of the population of Ukraine by region and to consider the functioning of the sports industry as a determinant of the community resilience formation in the post-COVID period. The research was conducted using the method of regression analysis based on panel data for 23 regions of Ukraine over 9 years (2013-2021). In the article, the coefficient of sports activity (as a share of the population participating in sports activities during the year) and the coefficient of population health (as an integral coefficient that includes 3 components – the mortality rate from all diseases, the morbidity rate and the disability rate) were calculated. An analysis of the dynamics of the calculated coefficients and their comparative analysis by region was carried out. At the next stage of the study, a regression analysis was conducted using a random effects model, without a lag and taking into account lags of 1-5 years. The results of regression analysis of panel data proved that the coefficient of sports activity has a positive but weak influence on the population health coefficient, and a weak negative effect on the population mortality coefficient. It was found that there is a 5-year lag in the influence of physical culture and sports on the indicators of mortality from diseases and the health of the population. There are other factors (economic well-being, standard of living of the population, environmental pollution, etc.) that significantly affect the indicators of morbidity and mortality. Because of this, the factor of sports activity is not key, but it should not be ignored either. Based on the results of the study, it is proposed to implement organizational, methodical and marketing measures for the promotion of a healthy lifestyle, regular sports and health activities and a sufficient level of physical activity as components of supporting the health of the population in the post-pandemic period and the period of martial law.
