STUDY OF THE COMPETITIVENESS OF UKRAINIAN MILK AND DAIRY PRODUCTS IN THE NATIONAL AND GLOBAL MARKETS

Abstract

The scientific article has proved the importance of studying the competitiveness of Ukrainian milk and dairy products in the national and world markets. The dynamics of development and competition in the world milk and dairy products market have been disclosed. In addition, the research has touched upon the dynamics by separate countries’ groups, which are divided by the level of income and development (countries with a high level of income; countries with incomes above average; countries with income below middle; low-income countries; low-income and food-deficit countries; countries importing only food; the least developed countries). The main trends and problems of the development of the world market of milk and dairy products in 2012-2021, as well as the place of Ukraine in the world market of milk and dairy products, have been determined. A comparison of the development and competition of Ukraine and ten leading countries producing milk and dairy products (Argentina, Australia, Brazil, India, Italy, China, Netherlands, Germany, Poland, and the USA) in the world market has been conducted. The export, import, and foreign trade balance of milk and dairy products in Ukraine has been studied. It enabled us to draw additional conclusions about the competitiveness of Ukrainian milk and dairy products in the national and global sales markets. The main trends hindering the increase in the presence of Ukrainian dairy products in the national and global sales markets have been identified. They include a reduction of production volumes; low adaptation of Ukrainian producers and processors to economic challenges. The main problems hindering the increase of the presence of Ukrainian dairy products in the national and global sales markets include the loss of competition, especially for dairy products with a high added value (cheeses, fermented milk products, etc.), and low adaptation of producers and processors to economic challenges. It has been noted that the Ukrainian dairy sector is facing a crisis. It has been emphasized that Ukraine needs to develop a set of measures at the macro-, meso-, and micro-levels to increase the competitiveness of domestic milk and dairy products in the national and global sales markets.
