GLOBAL GRAIN EXCHANGE MARKET: NEW CHALLENGES FOR UKRAINE IN THE CONDITIONS OF WAR WITH RUSSIA
Abstract
The change in the role of Ukraine in the world market from the leader in the production and supply of grain before the large-scale war of Russia to the organizer of the global initiative «Grain from Ukraine» during the war and the blockade of ports, in the context of solving world food security, preventing hunger and social chaos in some African countries, is shown. Such measures had a positive effect on the exchange prices of this product, which today has gained geopolitical importance and is in the field of constant attention of the UN. It is shown that the grain exchange market in Ukraine was never created, despite the creation of a significant number of agricultural exchanges. Instead, grain exports, which grew every year, required their participants to be familiar with world prices and the processes of their formation. It turned out that Ukrainian exporters were losing money by selling their own products at prices lower than world prices. A comparison was made of exchange prices for Ukrainian grain, in particular the futures contract for Black Sea wheat, which is determined by the global exchange holding CME Group with prices and a similar standard exchange contract traded 24/7 on this exchange and made on this basis offers for Ukraine in general and domestic exporters in particular. A specific example proved that the difference in prices is insignificant, which once again confirms the need for domestic grain traders and farmers' associations to master grain futures trading technologies on Chicago exchanges. In addition, it is quite profitable for Ukrainian farmers to trade at the same time on the European Euronext exchange. It has been proven that in order to solve these extremely difficult tasks, grain traders and producers of food, in particular grain, should actively participate in the processes of pricing this strategic resource, which, thanks to the actions of the aggressor, has turned into a tool of geopolitical pressure. This is possible only through their direct participation in grain exchange market trading on the global exchange holdings of the USA and the similar united European stock exchange Euronext.
