EUROPEAN EXPERIENCE OF CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANIZATIONS’ PRIVATE FINANCING
Abstract
The article gives a comprehensive study of the private financing experience of the civil society organizations’ social projects on the example of private foundations in Europe. It should be emphasized that diversification of the donor landscape is one of the changing aspects in the civil society organization’ development. In recent years, researchers have become increasingly interested in private foundations’ role as a «new» participants in the international development of civil society organizations. Despite the fact that private foundations have the potential not only to provide alternative sources of funding CSOs, but also to introduce innovative aid delivery models and create opportunities for new forms of partnership with more traditional participants. Moreover, private foundations can take more risks and provide a long-term perspective on civil society organizations’ financing compared to other "providers" of financial assistance. Over the last decade, research on private funding of the social projects has increasingly demonstrated that private foundations will become the great donors in near future. Under the term «а private foundation» the author understands an organization, which is usually formed to finance charitable goals or projects through grants. The study is devoted to a detailed analysis of the charitable activities of European private foundations, namely: the Robert Bosch Foundation (Germany), the Wellcome Trust (Great Britain) and the Garfield Weston Foundation (Great Britain). The author paid considerable attention to the analysis of the sectoral and regional structure of grant funding of the studied private foundations in Europe. The present study also analyzes the main directions and characteristic features of the charitable activities of the Robert Bosch Foundation, the Wellcome Trust and the Garfield Weston Foundation. Furthermore, the practical experience of grant financing of civil society organizations’ social projects by private donors in Europe is summarized. The paper reveals the main trends and regularities grant financing of civil society organizations.
