AUTHENTIC FEATURES OF TRADE DEVELOPMENT IN THE RIGHT-BANK UKRAINE IN THE XIX-XVI CENTURIES: PROVINCIAL PROSCURIV
Abstract
The article attempts to create an integral picture of the authentic trade and industrial “face” of the city of Proskurov through careful study of the city’s key factors and conditions of social and economic development during the 19th and the beginning of XX centuries which in aggregate ensured the transformation of the provincial city into a significant trading center of the Right-Bank Ukraine. The methodology of the article is based on a combination of historical and economic sciences methods of historicism; quantitative economic history and biographical. Understanding the subjects of entrepreneurship as an internal factor for the development of trade allows to affirm the application of the non-institutional method. The brief excursion of the city history from 1797 to the beginning of the 20th century is presented. The content of the events that made the most significant impact on the economic and economic development of the city was described. The key indicators of increasing the volume of trade and production, the number of residents in general and entrepreneurs in particular are presented in the dynamics, in particular those which characterize the strengthening of the economic significance of the city. The main areas of activity of Proskuriv merchants are presented, examples of innovative business ideas, successful use of new technologies of production and trade organization are described. It is proved that the key factors of the city’s economic growth were the transit situation, the railway connection, the presence of internal and external demand, entrepreneurial activity of the residents, which ensured the rapid development of trade, the consolidation of trade and industrial capital, the development of the city as a significant business center, as well as the formation of a powerful merchant layer. The article is an original scientific research on regional economic history, which looks particularly relevant in view of the processes of decentralization of state power and the transfer of a number of economic functions to territorial communities.
